REALTORS | CODE OF ETHICS COURSE
REQUIREMENT
There's always a lot confusion about the Code of Ethics course around the end of the quadrennial period.
Since January 1, 2001, all Realtors have been required by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) to complete 2.5 hours of ethics training every four years. The current NAR mandated Code of Ethics (COE) quadrennial cycle expired on December 31, 2012. That means that Realtors must have taken a COE course during the period of Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2012. The next quadrennial cycle will expire on December 31, 2016.
If you are NOT a Realtor (just a real estate licensee), you do not need to take this course. However, if your Brokerage firm is a member of a Realtor Board, then you must join the Board AND must Take this course.
There are 2 options to complete the requirement:
1. Take a course online from NAR.
NAR's course is FREE, takes approximately 2.5 hours, and can be taken in your pajamas. As soon as you pass the test, your completion is automatically uploaded to your NAR record that you have met the 2012 requirement. Note that this free online course does NOT count toward your continuing education with the NC Real Estate Commission.
2. Take the course with live instructor from approved provider.
What if a Realtor doesn't meet the training requirement on time?
Failure to meet the requirement is a violation of a membership requirement and results in suspension of membership until the requirement is met.
Check with your local association of Realtors to see if you have taken the course or not.
